Charles playing role of good teammate

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is working with the second team, but you won’t hear him complaining.

Charles, who ran for more than 1,000 yards last year despite not being the starter until the second half of the season, is taking a wait-and-see approach.

The Chiefs signed veteran running back Thomas Jones in the offseason, but most felt it was just insurance for Charles.

However, Charles has found himself as the team’s backup running back in training camp thus far. (Read More…)

Weis breaks piece of knee

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis had a piece of his knee break off with no warning.

Weis said it’s the reason he has been hobbling around training camp lately and using a cane.

The coach said that he already had problems with his knee before this latest, strange incident.

Weis expects to have surgery to repair the knee, but won’t do it until after the season is over. (Read More…)

Chiefs to open new season on Monday Night Football

By Bud L. Ellis

Despite coming off a season during which they had the worst record in the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs believe better times are to come in 2010.

And that new season will begin with a prime-time Monday night showing on national TV, as the Chiefs kick off the 2010 slate on Monday Night Football, Sept. 13 at home against AFC West Division champion San Diego.

The National Football League has announced dates and times for the upcoming season, and the Chiefs – who went 4-12 a year ago – open the season with two home games and the bye week in the first four weeks of the season. After playing host to San Diego for the opener, K.C. heads to Cleveland before returning home to face the 49ers.

Following the bye week, K.C. travels to AFC champion Indianapolis in week 5 and Houston in week 6. Two home games round out the first half: vs. Jacksonville on Oct. 24 and vs. Buffalo on Oct. 31. The second half begins with a tough stretch of three road games out of four: at Oakland, at Denver, vs. Arizona and at Seattle.

Denver comes to town in week 13 on Dec. 5, followed by trips to San Diego and St. Louis. K.C. ends the season with consecutive home games against Tennessee on Dec. 26 and Oakland on Jan. 2.

Chiefs look to rebuild with easier schedule in 2010

By Bud L. Ellis

Nobody had a worst record in the AFC last season than the Kansas City Chiefs.

But there are hopes that things will be better in 2010, and some of that optimism can be pinned on a schedule that isn’t extremely tough.

Kansas City faces just four playoff teams in the upcoming season, according to the list of home and road games released by the National Football League. Dates and times will be announced later this spring.

The Chiefs face AFC West division rival and defending division champion San Diego on the road and at home. The only other playoff team the Chiefs will visit is AFC champion Indianapolis. NFC West champion Arizona plays Kansas City at home.

Along with the Chargers and Cardinals, the Chiefs play host to Denver, Oakland, Buffalo, Jacksonville, San Francisco and Tennessee. Away from home, the Chiefs will play at Denver, Oakland, San Diego, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Houston, St. Louis and Seattle.

Eight of Kansas City’s games are against teams that finished with seven wins or fewer last season. Based on opponents’ win percentage, the Chiefs’ schedule ties for No. 22 in the NFL with Green Bay.
